IIM Calcutta’s Golden Jubilee: the Curtain Raiser (November 14, 2010)
The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, the first institute in the IIM System, has entered the 50th year of its journey on November 14, 2010. It was the vision of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of the country that led to the creation of institutions like the IITs and IIMs. Incidentally, November 14 is also the birthday of Pandit Nehru. What started as a small institution in late 1961 has today blossomed into one of the leading management schools in South Asia and the Asia-Pacific region. IIM Calcutta, being the first institution in the IIM System, November 14, 2010 also marks the Golden Jubilee of the IIM System. It is a very important landmark in the modern history of our country. With a definite plan we are celebrating the Golden Jubilee of the Institute and IIM System over a period of two years during November 14, 2010-November 14, 2012.
The celebration of the Golden Jubilee at IIMC has begun with a 3 day event during November 14-16, 2010. There were a two-day convention on Management Education in India during November 14 to 15 where directors from all the IIMs and renowned management schools in India and the world, some noted academicians and industry leaders, IIMC professors and alumni deliberated on significant issues and challenges facing the management schools in India and the way forward. On the third day the faculty, staff, alumni and students of IIMC reminisced about the Institute in a session on “IIMC@50: The Past, Present and Future”. It was followed by planting of saplings by different stakeholders. The three-day event came to an end by honouring retired members of faculty and staff, former directors, current faculty and staff who have served the Institute for a long period of time and contributed significantly to build IIMC into an iconic institution in management education.
Smt. Purandeshwari, Hon’ble Minister of State, Human Resource Development, Government of India was the Chief Guest at the Inaugural function on 14th November, 2010. His Excellency M.K. Narayanan, Hon’ble Governor of West Bengal was the Chief Guest for the concluding session of the two day convention on 15th November, 2010. Legendary Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia graced the occasion with his Flute Recital in the evening of November 14, 2010.
Several international conferences, workshops and seminars were organized as part of the Golden Jubilee Celebration – International Marketing Conference held during December 27-29, 2010 and International Finance Conference which was inaugurated by Hon’ble Union Finance Minister of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee held during January 9-12, 2011. IIMC-Strategic Management Society Paper Development Workshop was held during February 26- 28, 2011.
To celebrate the Golden Jubilee of IIM Calcutta, the Calcutta Chapter of the Alumni Association had organized GuruSpeak2010 with famous Marketing Guru Prof. Dipak C Jain, the Dean of Kellogg School of Management, North Western University, USA from 2001 to 2009 and Dean Designate of INSEAD on December 19, 2010 at Taj Bengal, Kolkata.
Reminiscence 2010, the Silver Jubilee Reunion of PGP 1986 (20th) batch, held on 23-25, December 2010.
Several publications such as a commemorative volume outlining the history of IIMC and its contributions to management education in India, compilation of case studies, memoirs by different stake holders, collection of speeches, and a book on "50 Golden Years of IIMC", profiling the prominent / distinguished alumni will be published sometime during this two year period.
Several dignitaries like the Hon’ble past President, Prime Ministers, Finance Minister, HRD Minister, etc, of Government of India and Hon’ble present Chief Ministers and Governors of West Bengal were invited and graced the campus as part of the Golden Jubilee celebration.
Eminent industry persons, scholars, intellectuals, social activists, artists, musicians, etc were also invited during these two years to participate in different events as part of the celebration of Golden Jubilee.
Several Golden Jubilee seminars, panel discussions, lecture series on different themes will be organized by the Institute, students, and alumni chapters in different cities around the world, spread over this window. Nostalgia, the annual alumni get-together in different cities will reflect the mood of celebration of Golden Jubilee in a variety of ways.
A number of students-led events such as Intaglio, the prestigious international business school meet held during January 7-9, 2011, and Carpe Diem, a unique cultural fest held during January 28-30, 2011, reaching to a new height as part of the Golden Jubilee celebration.

By the golden touch of the professionals at National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, IIM Calcutta had developed and unveiled its dedicated logo for the golden jubilee celebration which lasted for two years till November 14, 2012.

IIM Calcutta reaches 50th Year on November 14, 2011
IIM Calcutta organized a Convention on “Management Education for Sustainable Tomorrow”, while celebrating the completion of the 50th Anniversary. The Convention was held during November 14-15, 2011 as a part of the on-going Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Institute. Former President of India, His Excellency Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam inaugurated the Convention. During this two-day convention globally renowned speakers from various stakeholder groups shared their perspectives on the sustainability issues.
The objectives of the Convention were two-fold. Firstly, it helped to develop awareness and appreciation on the criticality of sustainability thinking among the audience. Secondly, a greater clarity on ideas and approaches has emerged on how to embrace and integrate sustainability education in the management curriculum to promote Sustainability Thinking among management professionals. In the process, IIM Calcutta played another pioneering role in promoting the integration of Sustainability Thinking in Management Education.
The host of speakers in the various sessions of the Convention on “Management Education for a Sustainable Tomorrow” included industry leaders like Jamshyd Godrej, Chairman, Godrej & Boyce, Mr. Juan Costa Climent, Partner &Global Leader for Climate Change and Sustainability, Ernst & Young, Ajit Balakrishnan, CEO, Rediff.Com, Dr. Ram Nidumolu, Founder and CEO of InnovaStrat and Low Carbon Enterprise Initiative, D. Shivakumar, Vice President and Managing Director, Nokia, IMEA, Sabyasachi Hajara, Chairman and Managing Director, Shipping Corporation of India and M.G. Parameswaran, Executive Director and CEO, Draft FCB Ulka, among others. The speakers also included distinguished academicians, professionals and management gurus like Dr. Stuart L. Hart of Cornell University, Dr. Dipesh Chakrabarty, University of Chicago Dr. Himadri Pakrasi of Washington University, Dr. Paul Shrivastava of Concordia University, etc.
Legendary Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt graced the occasion with his noted Mohan Veena and Danseuse Shovana Narayan with her Kathak dance in the evening of November 14, 2011. Mr. Deepak Dhamija, an alumnus of IIM Calcutta and a budding theatre personality, performed a drama with his troupe on November 15, 2011.
On the third day, November 16, 2011, there was a session “IIMC@50: The Felicitation” reminiscing about the Institute. The three-day event ended by honouring former Chairpersons of the BOG, former Directors, retired and former faculty members who had contributed significantly to build IIMC into an iconic institution in the field of management education.
Mr. Goutam Ghose, the famous Film Director, has been working on a documentary film on IIM Calcutta commemorating the Golden Jubilee. A curtain raiser of the documentary film was scheduled on November 14, 2011. The film will be released later this year.
IIM Calcutta had chosen this occasion to institute the Distinguished Alumnus Award to honour select alumni who have distinguished themselves through their extraordinary achievements and immense contributions to society and thereby made the Institute proud. Distinguished Alumnus Award Committee chaired by the Chairman, BoG of IIMC and comprising members from inside and outside the Institute had decided the list of awardees for 2011 from amongst nominations received from various stakeholders, viz., current students, alumni, and the faculty.
The alumni who have been selected for the award have made outstanding contributions in the corporate arena; in academics; in government/ policy making; in the international arena; and through their work in the NGO sector or philanthropy.
The following alumni have been named for the Distinguished Alumnus Award 2011 and many of them have received it in a solemn ceremony on November 15 and 16, 2011: Prof. Dipesh Chakrabarty, Mr. D. Shivakumar, Mr. Malli Mastan Babu, Ms. Meena Ganesh, Prof. Mohanbir Sawhney, Dr. Ramachandra Guha, Mr. Sabyasachi Hajara, Mr. U. Shekhar and Mr. Vinayak Lohani.
Closing Ceremony on November 14, 2012
The closing ceremony of the Golden Jubilee at IIM Calcutta was held on November 14, 2012. The 2-year long Golden Jubilee celebration which was kick-started in 2010 and continued in 2011 came to an end on November 14, 2012 when the occasion saw Dr Ramchandra Guha, Formerly Philippe Roman Chair of International Affairs and History at the London School of Economics and a distinguished alumnus of IIM Calcutta as chief guest. The inaugural session included a welcome address by Prof. Shekhar Chaudhuri, Director, IIMC, followed by Chairperson's address by Shri Ajit Balakrishnan, Chairman, BOG, IIMC and address by the Chief Guest. Incidentally Dr. Ramchandra Guha was the recipient of Distinguished Alumnus Award for 2011 but since he could not make it last year, he was presented the Trophy and Scroll belated by Mr. Ajit Balakrishnan, Chairman BoG, IIM Calcutta.
The next session was the screening of the Documentary Film on IIMC directed by Shri Gautam Ghosh and release of Commemorative Volume titled, “Citizens and Revolutionaries - An Oral History of IIM Calcutta” by Mr. Ajit Balakrishnan, Chairman BoG, IIM Calcutta. The occasion also included a special exhibition with archival materials at the foyer of auditorium on the day. The post-lunch session saw the announcement of the Distinguished Alumnus Award 2012 by Prof. Ashok Banerjee, Dean (New Initiatives & External Relations). There were four recipients and they were Shri Kirit Modi, Shri Patanjali G Keswani, Sri Srivatsan Rajan and Dr. Suresh Mahadevan Sundaresan. They were presented the Trophies and Scrolls by Shri Ajit Balakrishnan, Chairman, BOG, IIMC and Prof. Shekhar Chaudhuri, Director, IIMC.
Another interesting feature was the Open Forum on “Journey for the next fifty years: Some thoughts” moderated by Professor Ashok Banerjee. The Presidents of Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai chapters of IIM Calcutta Alumni Association spoke at length interactively on how they would like to help their alma mater in next fifty years. The day-long event came to an end with the cultural programme organized by the various student-run Cultural Clubs of IIM Calcutta.
