Received Ph.D. in Statistics in 1982 from the University of Calcutta. Stood first in first class in the M.Sc. (1977) and B.Sc. (Hons) (1975) examinations in Statistics of the University of Calcutta and secured a rank among the first ten in the Higher Secondary Examination (1972) of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education.

1. Recipient, J.C. Bose National Fellowship, Government of India, 2010-15. This is the most well-known scholarship from the Government of India for resident Indian scientists.
2. Recipient, S.S. Bhatnagar Award in mathematical scieces (2000). This is the most well-known scientific honor from the Government of India.
3. Recipient, National Award in Statistics in honor of Professor C.R. Rao (2001), from the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, Government of India.
4. Fellow, Institute of Mathematical Statistics, USA (elected in 1999).
5. Fellow of all the three national level science academies in India: (a) Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi (FNA, elected in 2003). (b) Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore (FASc, elected in 2001). (c) The National Academy of Sciences, India, Allahabad (FNASc, elected in 2003).
6. Recipient, Indian Science Congress Association Young Scientists' Award (1985).
