Prof.
Somprakash Bandyopadhyay is a PhD in Computer
Science from Jadavpur University (1985), Calcutta, India and B.Tech in
Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering from Indian
Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (1979), India. He is currently
working as Professor in MIS Group of Indian Institute of Management,
Calcutta from September, 2001. He is also acting as Project Director of
ADHOCNET Project, sponsored by ATR Adaptive Communications Research Laboratories,
Japan.
Prior to
that, he was in charge of the Knowledge Management and Learning &
Professional Development Group at PricewaterhouseCoopers Limited,
Calcutta for 6 years. Besides this industrial experience,
Somprakash has more than 16
years of experience in teaching, research and software development in
Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute, Japan, Indian Institute
of Technology Kharagpur, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, German
Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence, Germany, Tata Institute of
Fundamental Research, Bombay and Jadavpur University, Calcutta.
He was
a fellow of the Japan Trust International Foundation and worked in
Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute in Kyoto, Japan for 9
months in 2001 in the area of Ad Hoc Wireless Networks. He was also a
fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany and was
involved in post-doctoral research at the German Research Centre for
Artificial Intelligence, Saarbrucken for a year in 1989-90. He has more
than 60 research publications in international journals and conference
proceedings of repute. Recently, he has co-authored two books: “Mobile
Wireless Networks: Location Management and Routing”, published by
Artech House Books, London SW1V 1AH UK, 2003; and “Networking
Infrastructure For Pervasive Computing: Enabling Technologies and
Systems”, published by Kluwer Academic Publishers, MA 02061, 2003.
He has a variety of consulting experiences. During his
stay at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, he was involved in developing
two strategic documents in 1988 and 1989 to evaluate the status of
Electronics Industries and Computer industries in India and
suggested recommendations to help the Ministry of Finance, Govt. of India
in drawing up a comprehensive fiscal policy. In PricewaterhouseCoopers,
he was involved in a number of consulting assignments including ERP
projects. His current consulting assignment at IIMC is with ATR Adaptive
Communications Research Laboratories, Kyoto, Japan for three years (1st
July 2002 to 31st March 2005) on the design and development
of MAC and Routing protocols for Wireless Ad Hoc Networks using
Directional Antenna and development of a test-bed.
Prof. Bandyopadhyay is also working as Vice-Chairman in the Board of Directors of a start-up company, PervCom Consulting Private Limited (www.pervcomconsulting.com). The company is focused on developing devices and system solutions for remote tracking, monitoring and management of objects, human beings and environment using Active RFID tags / sensors and actuators with wireless mesh networking technologies.
