Director’s Message

Welcome to the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIMC), the first national level institution in the field of management education!

IIM Calcutta (IIMC) was set up by the Government of India on November 14, 1961 in collaboration with the Sloan School of Management at M.I.T, U.S.A., with the support of the State Government of West Bengal and the Ford Foundation. We celebrated our Golden Jubilee in 2011. We have come a long way from its small beginning and today it is acknowledged as one of the best institutions not only in the country but also in the Asia- Pacific region.

The Institute’s activities are guided by its vision, overall mission which have been decided by its faculty through a participative process.

Our students are selected through an extremely competitive process for programmes that are designed to select people with exceptional intellectual and leadership potential to meet today’s globally challenging business environment. Learning beyond the classroom is of equal importance in IIMC. Our students are encouraged to participate in seminars, business plan competitions, branding exercises, career advancement clubs, sports and cultural activities.

Research is at the heart of our intellectual activities. It helps us to create and update our intellectual capital. The field of management is undergoing a very rapid rate of change. There is hardly another field of education that has to cope with a comparable level of change as does the field of management. The Fellow Programme offers a unique opportunity to engage in high quality research.

At IIM Calcutta, we facilitate collaborative efforts and create opportunities for doing research in the frontiers of knowledge in the field of management. To sustain all our endeavours in a fundamental way, we stress the creation and generation of indigenous knowledge through cutting edge research in management and related disciplines. We create new knowledge with a practical orientation by encouraging inter-academic group research with an eclectic approach to the choice of research methods. IIM Calcutta is committed to educating scholars with outstanding intellectual capabilities to enable them to develop strong analytical foundation and ability to apply management concepts, frameworks, tools and techniques to real life problems of industry and other sectors of the economy.

The Fellow Programme of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta was started in 1971. It is a full-time doctoral programme that offers students opportunities for advanced studies and research in different specializations related to Management Science. The Programme aims to prepare students for careers in teaching and research in management studies and in related disciplines, and for careers in the government, in industry, and in other organizations that require advanced analytical and research capabilities. The coursework and thesis that are a part of this programme can be pursued in various areas of management — economics, finance, HRM, public policy and management, sociology, strategic management, management information systems, marketing, operations management, regional development, etc.

A big budget is set aside for internally-funded research and long-term interdisciplinary projects. Various centres for research have been set up in the institute in this regard like the Corporate Governance Centre, Management Centre for Human Values to integrate Western and Indian management philosophies and the more recent Case Research Centre and The Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Other centers of excellence include the Financial Research and Trading Lab, Centre for Development and Environment Policy, Pervasive Information Systems Group and the High Performance Research Group.

Research being our primary strength, the recent rankings have revealed that in terms of research output, the number of peer-reviewed publications, citations, international publications, IIM-Calcutta is one of the very best in the country. We need to sustain that focus. The vibrancy of our research culture is evidenced by the range and depth of the research being undertaken across the institute.

The Board of Governors has approved a proposal to launch a Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship scheme to (a) strengthen research at the Institute and (b) to enable researchers at other institutions to work with faculty members of IIM Calcutta.

We have an excellent faculty having advanced degrees from highly reputed institutions in India and abroad. Many of our faculty members are active researchers. A large number of faculty members attend international conferences every year to present research papers and several have taught at institutions abroad.

We at IIM Calcutta are very proud of the products of our doctoral programme. Many of our doctoral programme alumni are currently working with top management institutes in the country as well as known universities abroad. Some are working in well-known firms in positions that require advanced skill. We aim to provide our students the best possible academic environment in order to help them produce academically sound, analytically rigorous and innovative research that would be managerially relevant. Over the years the Fellow Programme has dynamically evolved to its present status as one of the top doctoral programmes in management and related disciplines in India. We have been continuously striving to strengthen the programme to promote high quality management research in India.
