Dear friends of IIM Calcutta, our large body of faculty, students, alumni, staff and all stakeholders,

On behalf of the Board of Governors of IIM Calcutta, it is my privilege and I am delighted to share the happy news that yesterday, the Board unanimously chose Prof. Uttam Kumar Sarkar to be our next Director.
The Board observed that Prof. Sarkar has an outstanding academic record, both as a student and a teacher. He has to his credit, many years of selfless dedication to IIM Calcutta, and has successfully discharged many administrative responsibilities during this time. Through his long tenure of service, he knows IIM Calcutta intimately: its history, culture and the aspirations of its large body of faculty, students, alumni, staff, Board, and all stakeholders. He articulated in the clearest terms an understanding of “what needs to be done and how it must be done” to help IIM Calcutta achieve its global aspirations. To this end, he presented a compelling and pragmatic agenda for his term as Director. He appreciates and understands the complexities of the role and the expectations. He comes across as a professional with courage of conviction, calm confidence, warmth and an ability to be both thoughtful and introspective. He is seized with and exhibits a strong sense of duty and purpose.
We welcome Prof. Uttam Kumar Sarkar and believe he will be an excellent ambassador for IIM Calcutta in any forum.
Please join my colleagues on the Board and me in congratulating Prof. Sarkar and affirming our support to him in the noble task of leading us to achieving our global aspirations.
We would also like to place on record our appreciation for Prof. Subir Bhattacharya who was our Director in-charge in the interim and shouldered the onerous responsibilities.
