Business Ethics And Communication

The Business Ethics and Communication group is a uniquely positioned academic venture within a premier Indian management institute like IIMC. Both business ethics and communication have today found their space in management institutions drawing from their intellectual roots in disciplines like Indology, Aesthetics, Human Values, Philosophy, Political Theory, Literary Studies, Communication/Media Studies, Semiotics, Language Studies, English Language Teaching (ELT) and their corollaries. Notwithstanding such non-managerial origins, these specialisations have developed to find their location within a frame of management that has enabled them to offer relevant knowledge, a practical tool kit and skill-set that is now regarded as indispensable for modern management. A quick survey of most mission-vision statements of management and corporate institutions across the globe adds to the inevitability of these subjects as not just academic but equally important professional aids. While students learn to be sensitive to ethical issues specific to the domain of business; they also learn to translate a conceptual understanding of the role of communication in management into a requisite skill set in this area. While ethical perspectives in leadership and entrepreneurship become cardinal managerial enablers in research skill sets, exploring the complex relationship of communication to management and public policy is an equally significant objective, particularly for Indian researchers. As an institutional group, we are endowed with the responsibility of ingraining ethical values in every managerial perspective and knowledge base and articulating such values while employing managerial skills and expertise; and also, simultaneously, contribute towards developing new teaching-learning communication tools that help derive actionable meaning out of multiple layers of information and knowledge. Together, we aspire to contribute to management as intellectual endeavour and humanistic, social and cultural practice.

Economics

Being a basic discipline in the study of management, there are three compulsory courses in Economics: Macroeconomics, Microeconomics and Indian Economics. These courses deal with the working of the economic system as a whole, with special reference to the Indian situation, as also the functioning of individual microeconomic agents under different types of market structures like competition, monopoly, oligopoly etc. The objective is to give grounding in the basic tools of economic analysis, their application and the institutional specificities of the global as well as the Indian economic scene.

The electives offer some degree of specialization in areas such as Economics of Development, International Economics, Economic Business Policy, Econometric Methods, The Economics of Human Resources, Globalization and Developing Countries, etc.

Finance & Control

The Finance and Control Group provides teaching and research in the areas of Accounting and Control, and Corporate Finance. The courses offered include basic courses in financial and management accounting and corporate finance in the first year. The optional courses in the second year focus on financial derivatives, risk management, business valuation, and quantitative finance.

Faculty research in the area of Financial Accounting looks beyond the boundaries of traditional accounting. The primary research interests of the Group include work on contemporary issues in financial reporting, disclosure, and contracts using financial information.

Faculty research in the area of Control includes understanding the role of information and measurement systems for allocating resources among firms in the economy, and between departments or divisions of individual firms; measuring performance of business segments; executive compensation; understanding the profitability of suppliers, products, customers, distribution channels, and business units; and formulating, executing and evaluating strategy by firm managers.

Faculty research in the area of Finance includes the study of the theory and practice of corporate finance, and study of markets and institutions for financial assets. Its greater emphasis is on business fields and its focus is on the use of economic analysis and statistical methods in dealing effectively with management problems in these applied business fields.

Human Resources Management

Human resource is the single most important asset that any organization possesses. The core competence of an organization ultimately rests upon the quality of this vital resource and on how it is leveraged by the firm to seek its competitive advantage. For a successful organization, human resource policies and practices must drive its strategic goals and help their effective realization.

Keeping in view the acknowledged importance of the discipline, the Human Resource Group offers a compulsory foundation course during the first year and several optional courses for the final year students. Course contents and teaching materials for all courses are constantly revised in tune with the emerging needs of the modern organizations.

The first-year compulsory course provides a broad systemic perspective of Human Resource Management (HRM) as a discipline. It introduces the key concepts, issues, systems and tools relevant to the field, along with their broader linkages. The final year optional courses enable the students to study topics of their interest in greater depth, as relevant to their area(s) of specialization or career goals. An appropriate selection of these optional courses would help a student to embark upon a career as a HRM specialist.

Management Information Systems

Information Systems (IS) provides information support to managerial decision-making. It is crucial for effective implementation of the planning and control functions in an organization. Recently, because of the growing capabilities and increasing availability of computer-based tools and communication technologies, IS plays a key role in the formulation and implementation of corporate strategies.

MIS group endeavors to develop precisely these capabilities among students by offering a balanced mix of courses in planning and managing of IS and fundamental understanding of ICT. The first year courses familiarize students with the basics of computers, communications, databases and popular application packages.

Electives on Strategic Management of IT, Information Economy, Neural Networks, and Fuzzy Systems help develop skills in strategic decision making. While DBMS and Knowledge Discovery discuss database and data mining applications to IS, Network Management and Security, ICT for Development, and E-Commerce provide thorough understanding of ICT and related applications.

Students get substantial exposure to modern technologies, as the Institute has a wide range of modern computing facilities.

Management Centre for Human Values

The Management Centre for Human Values (MCHV) has been created to focus special attention on the crucial dimension of values and ethics in management education and practice. Thanks to the pioneering work by Professor S. K. Chakraborty, the Centre, which is an integral part of the Institute, attempts to evolve an Indian model of management, drawing inspiration from four great sons of modern India Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi and Sri Aurobindo. At a time when large corporations worldwide are being exposed for gross unethical practices, the Centre places primary emphasis on human values, the lack of which has been largely responsible for many of the problems in modern organizations. On such strong foundation of human values, the Centre builds its initiatives around such areas like Applied Ethics in Management, Corporate Governance and Social Responsibility, Management of NGOs and Synthesis of the Best of the East and West in Management. It also brings out a bi-annual international Journal of Human Values, published from Sage. Through its various courses, management development programmes and in-company workshops, the Centre tries to foster a values-based organizational culture which enhances holistic managerial effectiveness for an ethically sound, socially responsible and ecologically sustainable future business scenario.

Operations Management

Managing processes and products involves design, production and delivery at a low cost while maintaining high quality and customer satisfaction. Operations Management focuses on these managerial issues - fields like operations research, mathematics and statistics that play a vital role. Presently, the major thrust areas are Supply Chain Management, Project Management, Service Management, New Product Development, Operations Strategy and Quality Management. Inputs received from courses in these fields help the students in assimilating the managerial concepts they receive in courses offered by other functional areas like Finance, Marketing and Organizational Behavior, among others, in addition to Operations Management.

The faculty members of the group are involved in state-of-the-art research in various areas of operations management and quantitative methods. The group offers several elective courses focusing on recent trends in operations management and quantitative techniques. It also has a strong presence in consulting and in offering management development and in-company training programmes.

Organizational Behavior

Designed to give students planning to become administrations, managers and executives, a better insight and appreciation of human problems in both industrial and non-industrial organizations, the courses in the Organizational Behavior draw upon concepts and conclusions from the interrelated fields of psychology, anthropology and sociology aiming at a synthesis of these in understanding the processes of organizational growth and development, organizational decision making and the role of an individual and group behaviour therein. The courses are structured to provide a deeper knowledge of organizational behaviour with specific emphasis on Indian situations. In addition, most concerted efforts are directed towards equipping the students with necessary behavioural skills for management of human resources organizations.

The Group offers two compulsory courses: Behavioural Sciences I and Behavioural Sciences II in the first and second terms respectively. These two courses provide the basic foundation for understanding individual, group and organizational processes utilizing theories and concepts with an interdisciplinary behavioural sciences approach. The core courses are particularly geared towards better appreciation of human and organizational phenomena in the Indian context.

The Public Policy and Management (PPM) Group at IIM Calcutta, a diverse multi-disciplinary group of active researchers and teachers, contribute to the making of future managers at one of the best management schools in the Asia-Pacific Region. Members of the Group address challenges of policy innovation, governance for public service delivery, relationship between government and industry, and try to influence public policy through high quality academic research and consultancy for policy analysis and programme evaluation.
