Dipesh Chakrabarty is the Lawrence A. Kimpton Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago. He holds honorary degrees from the University of London, UK and the University of Antwerp, Belgium. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and an Honorary Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. He is also a member of the Board of Advisers of the Humboldt Forum in Berlin.

His outstanding work on Rethinking Working-Class History: Bengal, 1890-1940 was published by Princeton University Press in 1989.

Prof. Chakrabarty’s historical study of Bengal’s working class is a classic work on the emergence of the working class and its relation with the trade union movement in India. His writings on cosmopolitanism, modernity and humanism in the era of globalization mark him as a front ranking thinker in culture studies.
