About the Cell
The Entrepreneurship Cell (E-Cell) at IIM Calcutta is a student-driven body dedicated to fostering an entrepreneurial mindset across the institute's community. Functioning as the primary platform for entrepreneurship-related engagement on campus, E-Cell curates a year-round calendar of speaker sessions, workshops, case competitions, pitching events, and collaborative initiatives that connect students with founders, industry leaders, and academic mentors.
The cell's programming spans early-stage venture ideation, business turnaround strategy, AI-driven enterprise building, social entrepreneurship, and sustainable innovation — reflecting the breadth of the contemporary entrepreneurial landscape. Through partnerships with organisations such as JD Birla, SwitchON Foundation, and IIMCreate, E-Cell extends its reach beyond the campus to engage the wider startup ecosystem.
Genesis — The Annual Entrepreneurship Summit
Genesis is E-Cell's flagship event and one of the marquee summits on the IIM Calcutta calendar. The 2025 edition drew over 3 000 participants and featured keynote addresses, masterclasses, a business carnival with 12+ student-led stalls, and dedicated sessions on topics ranging from AI agents in enterprise to reimagining healthcare and digital intimacy. Genesis also hosts online competitions — The Boardroom (case competition), Pitchers (startup pitching), and Startup Blitz — that collectively attracted over 2 100 registrations and garnered 79 000+ digital impressions.
Key Activities (2025–2026)
Speaker Sessions & Workshops
E-Cell regularly invites accomplished professionals and founders for interactive sessions. Recent highlights include a National Startup Day address by Mr. S. Devaranjan, Former Managing Director of Tata Elxsi, on business turnaround strategy; a keynote by G.P. Nath, Head of Global AI CoE at ITC Infotech, on AI agents as the new workforce; sessions by the co-founders of Larkai Healthcare and Flutrr; and the Entrepreneurship 360° event in collaboration with JD Birla, featuring workshops and panel discussions on AI's impact on entrepreneurship with a keynote by Alelo Roy, Founder and MD of Kolkata Venture.
Competitions & Quizzes
The cell organises national-level competitions through Unstop, distributing a combined prize pool of over ₹1,30,000 across events. The Biz-Tech Quiz, co-organised with ICQC, brings together participants from IIM Calcutta and peer B-schools.
Social Impact & Collaborations
E-Cell actively champions social entrepreneurship. Its partnership with SwitchON Foundation supports sustainable innovation through the Greenovation Energy Challenge, and the Business Carnival at Genesis featured product displays by women's self-help groups from Kolkata, drawing 400+ attendees. The cell also promoted the EFMD-accredited Global Management Challenge across the campus and collaborated with IIMCreate on founder interviews.

Vision
E-Cell aspires to be the catalyst that transforms IIM Calcutta students into founders, intrapreneurs, and innovation-minded leaders — equipping them with the networks, frameworks, and hands-on exposure needed to create enduring value in the real world.
E-Cell (Entrepreneurship Cell) aims to promote the entrepreneurship culture in and around the campus by providing multiple platforms to budding entrepreneurs where they can improve upon their business models, get mentorship by successful entrepreneurs, interact with investors and groom their entrepreneurship skills. ECell provides a conducive environment for budding as well as aspiring entrepreneurs.
