Who we are
Joka Meditates is the wellness and meditation Special Interest Group of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. We are a student run community that makes space for stillness on a campus that rarely slows down. Our work is simple. We hold regular meditation and yoga sessions, invite experienced practitioners to campus, and give every student an easy way to begin a practice of their own.
The group is built around the Heartfulness approach to meditation, which asks for no prior training, no special belief and no particular background. A student who has never sat quietly for five minutes is as welcome as one who has practiced for years.
Why Joka Meditates exists
Life at a business school moves quickly. Terms are short, deadlines overlap, and the pressure to perform is constant. Somewhere in that rhythm, students stop checking in with themselves. Joka Meditates was formed in 2024 by a small group of students who felt this gap and decided to do something about it. What began as a handful of people sitting together has grown into a recognised group with a full calendar of activity.
Everything about meditation and yoga is already available online, free and at any hour. What is not available online is a room full of people who show up together. That is the gap we fill. We are not a service. We are a community.
Our philosophy of life
We believe that a good life is built on two kinds of growth that must move together. One is outward growth, the career, the salary, the title and the recognition. The other is inward growth, the quality of attention, the steadiness under pressure and the ability to treat people well even on a difficult day. Business schools are very good at teaching the first. The second is usually left to chance.
Our philosophy is that these two are not in conflict. A calmer mind makes a better decision maker. A person who can sit with discomfort negotiates better, listens better and leads better. Practice does not slow a career down. It gives a person the inner steadiness to carry one.
This has nothing to do with religion. A student may believe in God or may not believe at all, and the practice works the same way. What we offer is a way to become more aware, more patient and more honest with oneself. That is a human project, not a religious one.
Our vision
We want every student who passes through this campus to leave with more than a degree and a job offer. We want them to leave with a practice they can carry for life, something they can return to during a hard week at work, a difficult year, or a moment when the usual measures of success stop feeling like enough.
In the longer term, we want Joka Meditates to be a permanent part of campus life, a group that every incoming batch inherits, joins and passes on. Not a club that depends on a few enthusiastic people, but an institution within the institution.
What we do
Our activities run through the academic year and are open to the whole campus. No registration, no fee and no commitment is required to attend.
| Initiative | What happens | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly practice circles | Short guided meditation sessions held on campus through the term | Open to all students |
| International Yoga Day | A morning yoga and meditation gathering held every June | Students, staff and faculty |
| Speaker sessions | Talks by certified trainers and faculty on mindfulness and working life | Open to all students |
| Wellness collaborations | Joint events with other student groups and campus festivals | Campus community |
| Quiet corners | Simple practices students can follow on their own | Anyone, anytime |
What we have done
Our most visible event so far has been International Yoga Day. Held on a June morning, the session drew more than 120 participants from across the campus community. People arrived voluntarily at half past six in the morning, in the middle of a demanding term, which told us more about the appetite for this work than any survey could.
Alongside this we have hosted speaker sessions with certified Heartfulness trainers and IIM Calcutta faculty, run practice circles through the term, and collaborated with other student groups on wellness programming during campus festivals. We are also building a small library of resources and a regular written note that helps students practice on their own between sessions.
Our impact
The measurable impact is easy to state. Hundreds of participants, sessions running through the term, and a growing group of students who now have a practice they did not have before.
The impact that matters more is harder to count. In a world where almost everyone is focused on climbing the corporate ladder and becoming financially successful, a student who also sits quietly for ten minutes a day begins to grow in a second direction. They become steadier. They handle failure better. They are kinder to the people around them. They advance not only as a professional but as a human being.
Perhaps the most important thing we provide is company. A student who wants to live this way often feels alone in it on a competitive campus. Joka Meditates gives them a community of like minded people, a room where the pursuit of a quieter and more thoughtful life is normal rather than unusual. That is what keeps a practice alive long after graduation.
