From The Editor's Desk

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken its toll on students and graduates across the globe. It has virtually affected the placement process, admission to new batches, summer internships, alumni outreach programs, and celebration of the flagship annual event, 55th Convocation at Joka campus. In the midst of the deadliest pandemic in recent history, the question of how to reopen colleges safely after months of lockdown is of great concern. First and foremost, the strategy cannot be a one-size-fits-all approach. Rather, the best-prepared colleges will use a multifaceted approach that leverages a range of public health strategies best suited to each institution’s resources, location, and culture. The MBAEx batch students have reached campus to use the institute’s Net facility for online classes. In order to use the institute’s Net facility for unhindered online classes, second-year students of the two-year MBA course (some of whom have severe network issues at their homes) may be allowed to reach back campus.

The cyclone AMPHAN in May 2020 lashed your beloved campus with ferocious wind and rain causing considerable damage to infrastructure. Known for its scenic lakes and lush green space, the campus had to be brought to normal through proper disaster management initiatives. The Joka campus is also poised for a complete transformation with proposed ambitious revisions in the Master Plan of the campus. The plan envisages the addition of a new academic block and new hostel capacity of about 1000 students.

IIM Calcutta, in association with ReNew Foundation, the philanthropic arm of ReNew Power, presented a power-packed webinar on 'Impact of Covid-19 on Global Businesses (with exposure to China)' in July. Like previous years, this year also the members of the ER Cell of student council conducted city meets for the upcoming (57th) MBA batch, this time, digitally. Our Distinguished Alumnus Awardee and CMD of Lemon Tree Hotels, Patanjali G Keswani addressed the students on the Fresher's Welcome session in August. Professor Devi Vijay won the prestigious Carolyn Dexter Award at the Academy of Management Annual Meeting 2020. The Institute-funded research projects at Social Informatics Research Group at IIM Calcutta led to the publication of Dr.Somprakash Bandyopadhyay's new book, "Social Knowledge Management for Rural Empowerment: Bridging the Knowledge Divide using Social Technologies" . Also, the 5th batch of PGDBA students have launched India's first student-run analytic magazine, AINA.

The issue includes students-turned-alumni across programs with their valuable thoughts on Joka experience and other happenings. A consolidated report on placement across all programs is also included for your perusal. Last but not the least, IIM Calcutta has been featured for the first time in Financial Times Executive Education Ranking 2020 in the customized executive education category.

Enjoy as you read and know how your cherished alma mater is keeping pace with time!

Stay safe, stay well!

Satish K Sehgal Doctoral Student Award 2020 for Excellence in Scholarship and Organizational Citizenship

Getting an admit to the doctoral programme at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta was one of the happiest moments of my life. Perhaps my only dream thereafter was to somehow complete the doctoral programme, but God has been really kind to me to have blessed me with much more than I ever wanted. IIM Calcutta is one place I cannot thank enough. The journey of a little less than six years spent at the campus transformed my thought process to bring out the best in me and above all developed me as an individual. A free and conducive environment for research at the institute helped me to pursue my own research agenda that I was passionate about.

The Best Publication Award 2020

I am thankful to the IIM Calcutta Alumni Association (Mumbai Chapter) and the award selection committee for honoring me with the Best Publication Award, Convocation 2020. When I hesitantly bade adieu to the world of corporate management to pursue PhD from IIM Calcutta in 2015, I had never imagined the journey would be so fulfilling, and the ending so satisfying. While I had experienced the life as a Jokar from the perspective of a PGP in 2010-12, I must say that longer tenure as a doctoral student felt totally different and much more nourishing to my soul. Interactions with professors were more personal and intellectually stimulating, friends became much more like my family, and the enchantingly beautiful campus truly felt like my home.

WISDOM FROM ALUMNI - PROUD TO BE A ‘JOKAR’

-by Bhaskar Basu 24th Batch Alum

Tracing a much-traversed path of ‘middle class’ Indian child growing up in the ‘70s & ‘80s, graduated as a Mechanical Engineer & then worked for two years to fund my MBA. Joka was a ‘mixed bag’ experience to begin with for me:

  • Trepidation of getting back to classrooms after a gap
  • Adjusting to the available hardware’ gap moving on from Mumbai
  • Cohabiting with a sea of mosquitoes as yet not experienced
  • Adjusting to the new group of bright persons with stellar credentials with a sense of “unknown.’

BATCH TOPPERS WISDOM

AkshayPuri, MBA 55th Batch Topper 2020

My time at Joka was full of varied experiences. The emphasis IIM Cal puts on helping its students pursue activities in addition to academics is truly unique. My own journey at Joka gave me the chance to play tennis at Sangharsh, get a dual degree as a CEMS student in Copenhagen, run in a 21k marathon as well as accomplish an IR 1 at the end of two years. What I learned to value the most however, was the bond among classmates, that tribe-like “Joka” connect that we have. I can safely say that none of the things I’ve accomplished could have been possible without the people I had around me. My second learning came as a rude shock - I didn’t want to miss anything and yet didn’t have time to do everything. Joka taught me the way to find a balance among the hundred things that demanded my time. Looking back, I can see quite clearly why alums say that even if we have left Joka, Joka doesn’t quite leave us.

FaridulQadar, MBAEx 13th Batch Topper 2020

IIMC was perhaps the best thing that could have happened to me. The learning at IIMC helped me in getting trained with leadership skills, and business knowledge required to take a leap in my career. I will be forever indebted to IIMC professors, who not only taught me various tools and techniques to solve complex business scenarios, but also influenced me to carve out a balance between functional excellence and business acumen. The quality of peer group at IIMC was of the highest order, and getting the gold medal in that batch will always remain a key highlight of my life. After passing out from IIMC, I am delighted to be a Jokar for life because it is a star-studded community that counts among itself members who are role models world over. Getting this prestigious tag for life is an achievement that I will always cherish. Membership of this elite group will always help me believing in myself, and my abilities, irrespective of the quantum of challenge. Finally, my Joka journey would not have been memorable had the unstinted and unwavering support of the PGPEX office, alums, mentors, and batch mates not been there.

Rintu Stephen, PGPEX VLM 13th Batch Topper 2020

April 2019 to March 2020 - A transformation journey powered by IIM Calcutta. I was born in Kerala, brought up in Calcutta, completed my mechanical engineering from NIT Durgapur in 2012, worked for TATA Motors at Sanand, Mumbai, and Pune for 6.5 years. The impeccable faculty and rigorous course structure at IIMC helped me to stretch and push myself beyond my limits. My learning curve was exponential as I was not just an MBA candidate but also the Placement Representative of the batch. The cohort has always been a safety net which I could fall back to and I believe that I have learnt something unique from each of my batchmates. The tiring sleepless nights, the thrilling group discussions, that excitement when I became the first rank holder from PGPEX-VLM Batch 13 - a plethora of emotions.

Joka – It’s a feeling - by Simran Pasricha, 56th Batch

Joka! It is not just a word, It’s a feeling! My first encounter with the word Joka was more than a year ago. After getting admitted into IIM Calcutta, a friend from another B school said , "Let's see how Joka treats you!".
