What is DPM at IIM Calcutta?

DPM is Doctoral Programme in Management offered by the Indian Institute of Management IIM Calcutta. It is a full time doctoral programme. On successful completion of the Programme, a student is awarded the Ph.D degree in his/her area of specialization.

Who can apply for the programme?

The eligibility criteria are as follows:

  1. First Class Master's or Post graduate diploma (2 years) in any discipline and a three-year Bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks in the aggregate.
  2. CA with minimum 50% marks or CS/CMA with minimum 55% marks, with B.com degree
  3. B.Tech/4 years degree with 6.5 CGPA or equivalent
  4. Non-engineering candidates who have undergone 10+2+5

years In addition the applicant must have obtained a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate in either the Secondary or the Higher Secondary Examinations of a Board (or equivalent).

Government of India guidelines for reservation are followed during admissions.

I am a final year student of Engineering can I apply for the programme?

Yes, you can apply for the programme. However, if selected, you will be provisionally admitted till you furnish all the documents satisfying the eligibility criteria. The deadline for submitting the final year documents is 31st December of the year of admission.

I am about to appear for the final year Master’s degree examination. Can I apply for the programme?

Yes, you can apply but the conditions remain same as given in answer to Q.3.

I have completed my post graduation/MBA through distance learning am I eligible to apply for the programme?

Yes, you can apply for the programme, provided you meet all other eligibility criteria.

How can I apply for the doctoral programme?

Applications for admission are invited through advertisements in various papers and journals. You have to apply online. Along with the online application, you have to upload all the relevant certificates and testimonials and furnish details of your referees. The online application starts tentatively in the first/second week of November.

Is there any admission test?

You have to take CAT or other test(s) in lieu of CAT depending upon chosen specialization.

I am a MBA/PGP from IIM; do I have to take CAT again?

If you have secured a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 6.00 out of 9.00 and/or equivalent and above you do not have to take CAT. You can apply directly through online process. Otherwise you have to take CAT or other prescribed examinations.

Is the rule applicable for MBAs from other IIMs also?

A full time two years MBA/PGDM holder of any of the IIMs with a CGPA of 6.00/9.00 and above (or equivalent) does not need to take CAT.

Can foreign students or NRIs apply for the programme?

Yes, foreign students or NRIs can apply for the programme.

How many areas of specialization can I apply for at a time?

You can apply for a maximum of two areas of specialization at a time.

Is there any fee for application? How can the application fee be paid?

An application fee of Rs. 1000/- / Rs. 2000/- is to be paid while applying. The fee may be paid either electronically through the payment gateway or by a crossed demand draft payable to “Indian Institute of Management Calcutta” on a bank in Kolkata.

Is there any exemption to the application fee?

The SC/ST/OBC//PWD/EWS applicants are required to pay the application fee of Rs. 1000/-, also it is mandatory to upload the copy of his/her SC/ST/OBC//PWD/EWS certificate while filing the online application form. All other applicants are required to pay an application fee of Rs. 2000/-.

What is the validity period of the CAT/GRE/GMAT/GATE/UGC-NET-JRF scores?

The test scores are valid for two years from the date of test (CAT is valid for one year). It should be valid on the deadline of submission of the application form.

Online GMAT/GRE (Take home) exam scores are not valid. Only test center-based GMAT/GRE scores are valid.

Do I need to send the letter of recommendation?

Yes, the letter of recommendation is mandatory. Along with the online application the applicant has to furnish the details of the referees. Once submitted, the referees will receive an email with the login credentials, where they have to give the recommendation online. No hard copy of the recommendation is accepted.

Who can write recommendations for me?

Usually a faculty member from the last institute attended can write recommendation for students. For working professionals it could be the superior of the candidate, who can elaborate on his/her research capabilities, can write letters of recommendation.

I am self employed. How do I choose my recommendation?

An industry expert who knows you or a fellow professional can write a recommendation for you.

Is the programme fully residential?

Residing inside the campus is not compulsory. However, most of the students prefer to stay inside the campus.

Is there any upper age limit to applying for the programme?

There is no upper age limit to applying for the Doctoral Programme.

What about Financial support?

From AY 2024-25, each student is given a stipend that starts at Rs. 42,000/- per month (Pre-CQE), Rs. 45,000/- per month (Post-CQE), and goes upto Rs. 50,000/- (Post-Thesis Proposal) with the student's academic progress. In addition, each student can avail the student development grants of up to Rs. 1,05,000/- for the first year of study, and of up to Rs. 35,000/- per year for subsequent years. The stipend and grants are given for four years, and can be extended for up to one more year on demonstration of satisfactory progress in dissertation work.

Additional financial support is available for Doctoral Students in their dissertation phase in the form of extra funds of up to Rs. 75,000 /- for field research (if needed). Further, students are required to take up Teaching Assistantships as and when available, that pay up to Rs. 33,600 per month (in addition to the stipend).

The monthly HRA of Rs. 10,000/- per month is given to single students and Rs. 15,000/- per month to married students (with family). The Institute also provides financial support to students to attend international conference. Students can also participate in one international workshop in lieu of a conference.
